October 18. We’re supposed to be well into spring, and pretty well into summer. Would somebody please mention that to the weather?

That aside, today is the birthday of Bobby Troup. He was in the original M*A*S*H movie, and had a major starring role in the TV series Emergency.

But he was also a songwriter, and wrote Route 66 for Nat King Cole, so that was one of the songs played tonight.

I also threw in versions by my dearly departed friend, Rod (Beachhead) Jeffrey and another version by the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Add some Eric Clapton with Steve Winwood at Maddison Square Garden and a touch of Jeff Healey, and you have a feel for where tonight’s show went.

Also, just a short note to mention Al Britton from the Bondi Cigars, who’s not been feeling well the last few weeks, and to wish him well. Let’s hope that you’re back up and about real soon now.

Yesterday we heard the sad news of the passing of Solomon Bourke. That, along with Saturday’s 70th birthday anniversary of John Lennon gave me a great start in terms of some points of interest around which to begin to build tonight’s show.

Add to that some new-ish music from Jesse McReynolds’ recent “Songs Of The Grateful Dead” CD, and a little bit of some Dave Getz (Big Brother and the Holding Company) and I think I had the makings of not too bad a show.

Janis, live at Monterey, 1967

I just came across this video clip of Janis Joplin, out front of Big Brother and the Holding Company, doing Ball and Chain, at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967.

I have the CD of the concert, with lots of other artists as well. It’s good to be able to see the artists performing though.

Enjoy.

How did I miss that?

Monday last, October 4, was the anniversary of the passing of Janis Joplin.

Sadly, I wasn’t aware of this until the following morning. Otherwise, I would have played some of Janis’s music during my show on that date.

I do feel quite bad about missing this; perhaps I need to add a calendar of important blues dates to this site?

Daylight Savings Time.
