Here we are, approaching the winter solstice. That’s if you’re in the southern hemisphere, of course.

So, winter, when a man’s mind turns to … blues. And more.

First of all, this week I managed to grab some of the recordings from Jazzfest 2011, and there were, as we know, some awesome performances. But now I can share some of the love with you: James Andrews, and Luther Kent.

And Arlo. Whose performance of St James Infirmary was awesome.

So, I thought, why not play a few other versions of that fine song? Cisco Houston, Hugh Laurie, and Tom Jones, perhaps?

Add a few drinking songs, and the usual mix of whatever-I-feel-like, and there you have it.

Back to something resembling normal. Whatever that might mean.

Nasser, in his lead up to my show, played some Kenny G, which I took as a challenge, to try to find some decent sax playing. Not too difficult really; I pulled out Paul Butterfield’s In My Own Dream, which has a great sax solo.

Add in a request for some Elvis, a little bit of funk from Sly Stone and James Brown, and then some blues, and you have tonight’s show.

For the last few weeks I’ve been in the USofA; the primary reason was to attend the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Along the way, I visited Memphis, taking in the Stax and Rock and Soul Museums, as well as Sun Studios, and I also managed to get up to Seattle and take in the Experience Hendrix Music Project.

All of these were great musical experiences for me, and in many ways, it was taking me back to my musical heart; almost to my whole reason for living.
